Snapshots and vignettes from 1968 about the state of the United States, "a nation at war halfway around the world, at war with itself and about to choose its leaders for the next four years." (From the front flap). Wakefield (1932-2024) was a wonderful storyteller with an eye for the absurd. The dust jacket is soiled and there is a short tear to the top edge of the jacket's rear panel. [xiv], 252 & [5] pages. A few page corners are bumped. Very good.
First edition. Inscribed on the half-title to Burt Britton, an idiosyncratic New York personality who worked at the STRAND Bookstore and collected personality self-portraits: "To Burt Britton, With good wishes, / Dan Wakefield".
