Illustrated cloth, gilt lettering to front cover/spine, 179 pages + 11-page list of select novels, one-page advertisement for Keating's Powder, and 32-page list of standard reference volumes/illustrated gift books (the latter illustrated). Bumped/moderately worn corners/spine ends, cover soil, gift inscription to previous owner, front hinge partially going, strongly tanned, general wear..

Leather is quite worn and slightly pealing in some places and the marbling is a little faded. Some light foxing and page tanning throughout. London: Ward, Lock and Co., 1883. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Undated, but faded ink inscription to the front end paper is dated 1883. Original binding of red cloth with decorations and titles in black and gilt. Some wear to spine ends, some darkening but remaining neat and robust. Pattern also imprinted on the back board. Corners bumped. Internally hinge and text block sound, inscription at the front and remains of childish penciled scribble to the rear end papers. Coloured frontispiece illustration entitled "The Departure". One or two smudges to pages, but generally smooth and clean, no spotting or foxing. Several pages of publisher advertising at the rear. A very good, neat copy.

With the blue and black dust-jacket, originally priced at 12/6, and re-priced to £1.25 with a sticker. Jacket price-clipped, otherwise a lovely fine copy. A message found in a bottle, inside a shark, tell Lord Glenarvan that Captain Grant has been wrecked, and where to find him, but little else... First published in French in 1867, and originally translated into English in 1873.
