Description:
Paris, 1779. Maps. Very good condition. A map of comparative cartography of the West coast of North America, from the Straits of Anian to Cabo San Lucas and the southern tip of Baja California. Extracted from two maps, reportedly done by Vischer in 1612 and 1641, with information derived from earlier mapmakers. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. The smaller inset map shows much more of the Strait, along with an open sea, making a suggestion of a Northwest Passage. The coastlines vary in both maps, with the smaller one listing important place names such as C. de San Francisco and los Farilones; while the larger shows the Bay of San Miguel (current day San Diego). The larger map showing a section of coast where the Sierra Nevada are drawn called "Nova Albion",… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1772. Very good condition. One of the first studies in comparative cartography, here are two maps of the west coast of the United States from the Strait of Anian (modern day Alaska) to the tip of Baja California, one inset on the other, and with intriguingly different interpretations of the same area. These are extracts based on maps by Vischer of 1612 and 1641, and appeared in the Supplement to Denis Diderot's Encyclopedie. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. Description:
Paris: Diderot, 1772. VG+, b&w as issued, heavy paper, minimal dampstain lower margin outside plate line. This map has exceptionally wide margins, except the left upper margin where trimmed for binding into the book (folds as issued). The above date applies to the plate, not the publication date in Didereot. The two maps used by the Robert de Vaugondy family to develop this image were by Plancius and Visscher. There is a large upper central inset labelled 'Mexicana', which as positioned would have extended into modern west and midwest, with 'Anian Regnum' positioned in the northwest by the strait. California appears peninsular here, with the northern labels of Anian and Quivira Regnum, and the southern portion crudely marking the Sierra Nevada range and Nova Albion. An interesting, if quite speculative map, on heavy paper, with the full handsome copperplate engraved image measuring 11.5x14 inches..
