Poor. hardback. hardback, quarto, spine detached in two parts and loosely inserted, damp stain to the leading edges of the boards and penetrating to the first few leaves at the front of the volume. Binding cracked but stitching holding, the plates are all as called for but all are markedly foxed to the edges. A working copy or one for the binder. .

Has been rebacked with a maroon cloth. Black and white plates with tissue guards + some illustrations in text. Some light foxing and slight marks throughout..

NEAR FINE text & plates. 18 plates & 20+ in text. 29x22(cm), vi,97pp . Tight binding. Inner hinge papers cracked but hinges still sound. Owner's sticker over earlier armorial bkplt. Pencilled notes & names (some erased) on pastedown & fep. Frontis & tp with few lightly foxed spots. The 1/2" strip next to tp spine more heavily stained: odd as no other leaves so effected. Few text pages with small spots of faint foxing. Some offsetting of plates to adjacent leaves. Pix clearly show all flaws but for edgewear. .

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1845. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. 97pp. 44 illustrations on full page plates as well as vignettes in text, plus engraved title page and frontispiece. Nicely bound in quarter green morocco, gilt spine title, pebble-grain green cloth. Plates have varying degrees of light spotting and soiling else this is a very good copy in a fine binding.

A solid, very presentable copy to boot of the 1841 1st edition of this architectural examination of (largely) stables, kennels and stud farms. With 43 engravings (as called for) complementing George Tattersall's text, in addition to a number of full-page plans (with their accompanying original tissue-guards). Professionally re-backed in a chocolate-brown spine and professionally --and tastefully-- reinforced along the inner hinges. Notable foxing at the preliminaries, otherwise clean, crisp and bright internally. Wonderful original gilt-titling and design at the front panel, decorative blindstamping and rule to both panels. Light rubbing at the rear panel. still though firmly VG to VG+ and quite well-preserved. Quarto, 97 pgs. Part I: The Stud Farm; Part II: The Stall; Part III: The Kennel; and Part IV: Race Stands.

First Edition of what is probably the earliest book on the subject, by sporting architect, illustrator, and author, George Tattersall. The work contains extensive discussion, with illustrations, mostly by Tattersall himself, of appropriate designs and conditions for building stud farms, animal stalls, and kennels.
