New York: Harper & Brothers, 1938. First Edition. Octavo (21cm). Tan cloth boards, stamped in red and black; dustjacket; 340pp. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on front endpaper: "Paul Jordan Smith - his book - Wessel Smitter - his Friend / W.H.S. / Feb. 1939." A worker's life and hard times in the Detroit auto industry, written by a one-time Ford employee. The inscribee, Paul Jordan-Smith (1885-1971), was a California journalist and editor who achieved notoriety in 1931 as the founder of the so-called "Disumbrationist School of Aesthetics" - an artistic hoax which took in a number of well-known art critics who responded positively to his exhibition of intentionally bad, and technically inept, paintings.
