Description:
First edition. Book has bookplate on the verso of the front fly, flat paper boards instead of glossy boards, near fine. Dust jacket is not clipped anywhere and does not have a price printed, near fine. Very rare in this "transitional" state. Younger and Hirsch pp. 26-28: "Flat paper boards with no printed price on wrapper…These are most likely transitional copies put out during the time that the publisher was contemplating making Beginner Books a series to be issued at 195/195." It can be argued that copies with this unique jacket are rarer than the initial issues with the 200/200 price.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1957. First edition, first issue of Dr. Seuss' classic work. Octavo, original illustrated unlaminated boards. Inscribed by the author, "For Ruth Dr. Seuss." Fine in an excellent dust jacket with light wear. All issue points present: price of 200/200 on the dust jacket, no mention of the "Beginner Books" series on the rear panel, and has four paragraphs of educator's reviews on rear panel. Book contains a single signature and 61 pages with a message on final page before end paper contained in an outline of the cat's hat & head. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very nice example. "A person's a person, no matter how small," Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." "The Cat in the Hat was so successful that Random House, publisher of all the Dr. Seuss books since 1937, created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat… Read more

Description:
New York: Random House, 1957. Near fine in very good plus jacket. First edition, first state of this subversive update to DICK AND JANE, based upon the idea that kids would get more excited about reading if they enjoyed the material. Challenged to create a reader for young children using only 220 different words, Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE and the rambunctious CAT IN THE HAT: kids wanted to read about the antics of the cat, just as Geisel had hoped." The first book featuring the American icon, this copy comes directly from the stock of… Read more

Minute wear to spine ends and corners, slight foxing to interior edges of boards, hinges mended, else a clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (light wear to corners and edges, minute scratching to front and some light soiling to rear).
First edition, first state (Younger/Hirsch #7). Challenged by Josh Hersey to create a basic reader that would be far more appealing to children than "Dick and Jane" and other such standard fare, Seuss created a classic that sold over a million copies in its first few years and went on to become one of the most beloved children's books of the 20th century. Named to both School Library Journal's Top 100 Picture Books of all time and The National Education Association's list of Teacher's Top 100 Books for children, it would be hard to find an American child or adult today who did not know The… Read more
