New York: Brentano's, 1928. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Good. Octavo, 446pp. An abused copy, good only, but with the spine expertly re-backed with original spine laid down. Corners worn and fore-edges sunned - a cheaply produced book, typical of Brentano's at this time. 1928 was a transition year for Brentano's, when the company inconsistently began to state first editions. With no printing or edition statement, we are unsure if this is a true first, but believe it to be so. Ex-Planned Parenthood Association of St. Louis library, with some markings of that institution, and evidence of removal to the endpapers. Despite all these strikes against it, this is a scarce book in any condition, and this copy is boldly SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Margaret Sanger on the front free endpaper: "To Mrs. S. [W.?] McPheeters my regards and compliments. Margaret Sanger 1937." The 1928 1st edition of this moving collection of letters written by women --often in desperation-- to Margaret Sanger (1879-1966), perhaps the nation's most prominent birth control activist of the early 20th century. Solid and VG (a degree of light soiling to the panels, a small number of signatures uncut) in a surprisingly bright and crisp, price-intact, VG+ to Near Fine example of the wonderful dustjacket. Octavo, chapter headings include "The Pinch of Poverty", "The Trap of Maternity", "The Struggle of the Unfit", "Double Slavery", "The Voices of the Children", etc. Not unlike Nathaniel West's 1933 "Miss Lonelyhearts" in its sheer pathos.
