Some scuffing to cloth. Dampstain on front. Holes in hinges. Text block edge roughened. Pages 33 to 39 have large tears in margins. Foxing to first pages including frontispiece tissue guard. A few pages uncut. A collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry, supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Barham, an English clergyman. The amusing stories have been illustrated by many artists over the years, including John Leech, George Cruikshank, John Tenniel, but surely Arthur Rackham is the most suitable for these tales.

Large 8vo, blue cloth in dust jacket, book very good with slight mustiness, minor spottiness and faint discoloration to spine and joints, and foxing to edges of text block and sometimes intruding into the margins of the pages, jacket good, light edgewear, some tanning and foxing, some neatly mended tears to rear panel, one small hole to rear panel of jacket the size of an apple seed. With 24 plates mounted on gray paper, 12 tinted full page illustrations. Rare in jacket.

1907. Original artwork of Catherine of Cleves Published within The Ingoldsby Legends in 1907. This fine watercolour accompanies "The Tragedy", a story in verse of Catherine of Cleves and her love for Monsieur St. Megrin. It was reproduced opposite page 184 and is one of the 24 colour plates. The published plate shows the dates "[18]98 & [19]07" on a panel. These have been overpainted on the original artwork. Rackham's first version of The Ingoldsby Legends was published in 1898. A revised and coloured edition was published in 1907 with a note by Rackham stating that "many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again - those which have been worked on to any great extent being now signed with both dates, 1898 and 1907".
