Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co, 1905. Small Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. Front free endpaper missing, minor general wear. 1905 Small Hard Cover. xii, 100 pp. A collection of Mother Goose rhymes. Many persons imagine that Mother Goose is a myth,--that no such person ever existed. This is a mistake. MOTHER GOOSE was not only a veritable personage, but was born and resided many years in Boston, where many of her descendants may now be found. The last that bore this ancient paternal cognomen died about the year 1807, and was buried in the Old Granary Burying Ground, where probably lie the remains of the whole blood, if we may judge from the numerous grave-stones which mark their resting place. The family originated in England, but at what time they came to this country is unknown,--but probably about the year 1656.

This copy is SIGNED by Harriet Blackstone C. Butler, also known as "America's Mother Goose." Butler is named in Hale's introduction - her authentic, handwritten signature appears below Hale's facsimile signature on the last Introduction page. (There are photos available online from the 1920's showing Blackstone dressed as Mother Goose and reading a copy of this book.) Blackstone has also handwritten the "motto of Julia Ward Howe" (author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic") on the front end paper, as follows: "Love to Learn & Learn to Love." Also included is a small printed sheet referencing "Mother Goose's" grave in the Granary Burial Ground in Boston with a brief biographical sketch.
