Paradise Lost: No dates, but both vols prob c. 1945. pp. lvi, 422. Previous owner's name to flyleaf, a few scattered underlinings, marks. Paradise Regained, The Minor Poems and Samson Agonistes. pp. lxiii, 633. Both a little bumped to spine ends, spines faded, signs of use, but a very decent set nonetheless and structurally sound. No DJs.

Rahway NJ: The Mershon Company Two small books published by Mershon & company around 1897 -99. In very solid condition. Paradise Lost has a previous owner's signature on top of FFEP otherwise unmarked. Pale yellow cloth covered boards with black art nouveau style decoration on front board and black titles. Very slight aging to boards and minimal bumping to edges. Paradise Regained ( including Samon Agonistes) is completely unmarked and is in comparable condition to Paradise lost . Green Cloth coverd boards with the same art nouveau design on front board. A delightful matching pair!

Vol I of Paradise Lost with half title as called for, Vol II with none which is correct [it was only issued for Vol I but not Vol II]. Ad leaf of Paradise Regained is preserved as it should be. This printing has the small daggers at the befinning of each signature. 4 3x5" books encompassing the complete rendering of Pardise Lost and Pardise regained. 16 books in 4. .

Contemporary red morocco, spines lettered in gilt, frame to covers of double gilt and blind rules with floral cornerpieces, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved title pages (2 general and 12 divisional in Paradise Lost, 1 general and 3 divisional in Paradise Regained, 1 general and 5 divisional in Poems, all complete) Bound without half-titles. Very light soiling and darkening to bindings, but fresh and well-preserved, plates lightly toned else contents clean. A very attractive set.

Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. All three Volumes firm. This set comes from the library of Maud Bourn, wife of irish politician Arthur Rose Vincent (who, together with his parents-in-law, donated Muckross House and Gardens and its estate and gardens to the Irish State). All three Volumes include Maud Bourn's beautiful Exlibris to the front pastedown and the books were obviously either gifted to her from her future husband Arthur Rose Vincent or purchased by Maud Bourn herself in San Francisco, after she met her husband traveling from Shanghai to San Francisco [all three books bear the book-stamp of D.P.Elder and Morgan Shepard to the rear pastedown]. Both volumes tight and VG+ in their handsome late 18th-early 19th century full calf. 5 raised bands along each spine, fine gilt-tooling within the compartments, bright gilt-letterered title and author labels. Just a touch of light scuffing at the panels, very light rubbing along the spine bases. Elegant armorial bookplate to each front pastedown, otherwise very clean internally, with only light, infrequent foxing. Octavos, lovely matching marbled endpapers.
