Description:
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1792. [4],[181]-248pp. 20th-century three-quarter morocco and cloth, gilt. Titlepage and later typed sheet tipped in at front of text. Text lightly tanned. Very good. May issue for the last year of the AMERICAN MUSEUM..., containing an account of "Western Discoveries" in the "interior regions of America." The brief article tells of British Mr. Stuart who trekked from the Great Lakes to the headwaters of the Missouri and then "within about five hundred miles of the shores of the Pacific ocean." The only thing that kept him from reaching the coast was a savage Indian war. This issue also contains some articles on the South Sea Bubble and John Law. The AMERICAN MUSEUM was America's first literary magazine, and a pioneering effort on the part of its publisher, Mathew Carey, to bring news to a national audience, and to develop and promote an indigenous literary culture. Its success helped establish Mathew Carey as the leading printer of his generation. Through the publication…

Description:
Washington's First State of the Union Address & Jefferson's Report on Currency, Weights and MeasuresMathew Carey's American Museum was published from January, 1787 to December, 1792. According to Mott, it shared with The
Columbian Magazine the honor of being America's first successful magazine. This is volume eight (of twelve volumes with six issues each) with the issues from July through December, 1790.
The volume contains two signature pieces from the early Federal period -- Washington's first State of the Union address (Appendix II, pp. 47-48) and Jefferson's report on currency, weights and measures (Appendix II, pp. 35-46). Among the other noteworthy content is Ferdinando Fairfax's "Plan for liberating the negroes within the United States," essentially a gradual, voluntary, government-assisted emancipation with relocation of the freed slaves to a new colony in Africa.

Description:
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey; Carey, Stewart, and Co. No. 188 Market-street, 1791. Original Sewn Binding without outer wrappers, 8vo, pages 286-384 + 41-48, 37-48, [total 120 pages] with different sections correctly paginated for this issue. With Moses Seixas' famous letter to President George Washington Seixas wrote to President Washington on behalf of the Newport congregation, whose home is the Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue still standing in America. This letter (which appears on p 40 of Appendix II) and Washington's reply comprise one of the most famous statements on religious freedom of this period. Here published in America's first literary magazine, George Washington's famous phrase describing a government that "gives to bigotry no sanction, and to persecution no assistance," was originally coined by Seixas in this very letter. It is a moving, Biblically toned greeting to the president, and was repeated by Washington in his reply, assuring it a place among the most cherished in the…
