Frontispiece plus 7 full-page illustrations plus folding map. 199 pp. Jacket is taped to boards. Ex-library with sticker on jacket spine and cover, stamp on top and bottom block edges, card pocket inside front cover, and bookplate on front free endpaper. Jacket has a 1" chip at top of front cover and some scuffs and small chips around edges. Book is excellent, and folding map is in perfect condition. This is a scarce first edition of historian Grant's publications of the journals of Capt. Marcy, detailing his explorations in Oklahoma and New Mexico in the mid 19th century. An uncommon edition with a very attractive folding map.

In the original publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt spine title. Early signature in ink on the top margin of the title page. Light chipping at the joints and spine ends, corners are bumped, lacking the front free endpaper, else very good with light scattered foxing. With 64 fine lithographic plates by H. Lawrence as follows: Landscapes (plates 1-12); Geological Sections (folded plate 1, plates 4-11); Palaeontology (plates 1-6); Zoology (plates 1-18); Botany (plates 1-17,19-20). Botanical plate 18 and Geological plate 2 were not issued. It is likely that Geological plate 3 was not bound into this copy, as there is no indication of it having been removed. 8vo, original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, illustrated with many lithographed plates, xv, [1], 286 pp. + plates. Joints splitting, spine, partially torn away from book case, ends frayed and edges are rubbed, bookplate, some foxing; else very good. This work represents an important exploration of previously unknown parts of present day Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arkansas, by one of the major figures in the settlement of the frontier. “Contains authentic information regarding the peculiar customs of the Indians of the southern plains. Their mode of warfare, their invariable violation of the chastity of female prisoners, and the condition of their dwellings and villages, are particularly described”(Sabin). Wagner-Camp adds that “Marcy’s report abounds in topographical and geological detail.” The plates include a number of views, along with those on paleontology, zoology, and botany.
