Illustrated with a double page map and with several double-sided plates of black and white photographs. Edited by John C. Ewers. Part of the American Exploration and Travel series. Reprinted from a 1839 limited edition, this is the first Oklahoma Press edition. Leonard traveled with Joseph Reddeford Walker's party across the Great Basin and through the Sierras to California (the party traveled through what is now Yosemite National Park). Leonard also spent time with the Crow people and recorded part of their history. Jacket is price-clipped with a small tear to its front panel.

Octavo, 317pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. From a limited edition of 520 copies, as stated on limitation page. Complete with frontispiece fold-out map and five additional illustrations. From the collection of C.G. Littell, with note on front endpaper stating that "my original Zenas Leonard sold for $789.00 at Parke Bernet, Feb. 5th, 1944." Some foxing to endpapers, occasionally in text. Text block stable. (Howes L264) (Currey & Kruska 235). This work was reprinted from the scarce 1839 account of Zenas Leonard's firsthand description of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California.

This copy has an illustrated bookplate of 'Alexander Thomas Leonard, Jr. United States Army, San Francisco' on the front paste down. On the right front flyleaf is a clipped signature of Leonard and his signature on the right front flyleaf. Two checks (1937-39) signed by Leonard are laid inside the front cover. On the half title page is an inscription - "San Francisco Examiner April 12 1922." Below the inscription is a news clipping concerning the prices of rare books in California.
