Darkness at Noon is signed by Arthur Koestler on the front free endpaper. Each volume is very good in a very good dust jackets with some rubbing and wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. First printings are rare signed.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1940. His best known work, finely bound First edition, first impression. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in tan morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Some mild occasional foxing, a very good copy in a fine binding.

Cape, 1940. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Poor. The boards are a bit marked and worn. Internally mostly clean and tightly bound - if slightly cocked and sprung. London: Jonathan Cape, (1950). First edition, later printing but scarce in any early printing of the Cape first edition. Translated from the German by Koestler's companion, the sculptor Daphne Hardy, who smuggled her translation to England from France, where Koestler had been interned during the war. INSCRIBED BY KOESTLER on half-title page, "Arthur Koestler, being duly sworn, deposes and says, that Harold Granata is a shining exception among consuls, vice consuls and such, in as much as being human. London, September 19, 1951/ Arthur Koestler." Koestler had been granted permanent residence in the U.S. just a few weeks earlier; Harold M. Granata was U.S. Vice Consul to London at the time. A fair copy foxed on endpapers and page edges and with cloth at spine thinned in areas from what would appear to have been old insect damage. In supplied, good to very good later-printing dust jacket. Scarce signed or inscribed.

Good copy in a poor late issue dustwrapper with reviews on it, including one by George Orwell, marked, rubbed and heavily chipped at top edge. Rare.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1941. First US edition, second printing. This was E. M. Forster's copy, with ownership to front free endpaper "E. M. Forster, from West Hackhurst," Abinger, where he lived from 1924 to 1946. This copy was later gifted by Forster to his friend Eric Fletcher, who had met him when he was an undergraduate at King's College between 1945 and 1948. The 68 year old Forster was, by then, firmly settled into Cambridge college life, living the life of a traditional bachelor don, "...he was looked after; he was among friends; he knew the way of life and loved the city and it's buildings... and at his age it was convenient" (Furbank), and modestly put up with his great fame, finding his enormous daily post a nuisance but enjoying a stream of visitors, many of them young men who looked on him as a mentor or sage.
