Octavo, three quarter brown leather over tweed cloth, gilt and black rules, gilt spine titles and decorations. xvi + 142 + 2 pages of publisher's ads. Decorated endpapers. The illustrations in this edition are from original designs by Mr. Standfast. This edition has been printed from that of 1765 (the second) and compared with the quarto of 1798. Light scattered foxing. This appears to be a special, deluxe binding, differing from the cloth trade binding. There are three former owner bookplates, two in the front, and one in the rear. Considered to be the first Gothic novel, first published in 1765, this is a handsome 19th century edition.
