It is both a valuable addition to Arctic history, and a gripping adventure story.Who was the first to reach the North Pole: Frederick Cook or Robert Peary? Or did neither? This book provides a plausible answer. After the British National Geographic Society persuaded Peary's family to finally release his diary, notes and astronomical observations, veteran polar explorer Wally Herbert was invited to assess them. Herbert, who retraced the routes of both men, provides an intensive examination of each man's claim to the Pole. He demolishes Cook's claim, then seriously questions Peary's.
