Untrimmed in calf backed cloth boards, top edge gilt (spine rubbed, binding slightly worn at extremities, edges somewhat darkened, small collector's stamp on the last page). No. 369 from 542 copies printed by D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press. The play was dramatized from a short story "The Three Strangers" written in 1883. Six copies of an earlier version of this play was printed for copyright purposes in New York in 1893. The play was first produced at Terry's Theatre in London on June, 3, 1893. The present version was revised by the author and produced on June, 2, 1926 at Keble College, Oxford.

Crawford of Tring, beneath which he has written, ''Bought at the sale of Thomas Hardy's Library at auction rooms of Messrs Hodgson & Co, 115 Chancery Lane, May 26th 1938 (Part lot 90)''.
