New York & London: The Fountain Press and the Cayme Press, 1930 4to (25.5 cm), [8], 38 pp, 4 full page illustrations in color by William H. Cotton. Untrimmed in calf backed cloth boards, top edge gilt (spine rubbed, binding slightly worn at extremities, edges somewhat darkened, small collector's stamp on the last page). No. 369 from 542 copies printed by D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press. The play was dramatized from a short story "The Three Strangers" written in 1883. Six copies of an earlier version of this play was printed for copyright purposes in New York in 1893. The play was first produced at Terry's Theatre in London on June, 3, 1893. The present version was revised by the author and produced on June, 2, 1926 at Keble College, Oxford.

A dramatisation by the author of his story The Three Strangers. An earlier version had been privately printed in an edition of six copies for copyright purposes in New York in 1893. The author revised the dramatisation in 1926.This copy is from the library at Max Gate, Thomas Hardy's Dorchester home: on the front free endpaper is the ownership inscription of one J.G. Crawford of Tring, beneath which he has written, ''Bought at the sale of Thomas Hardy's Library at auction rooms of Messrs Hodgson & Co, 115 Chancery Lane, May 26th 1938 (Part lot 90)''.
