These included RKO, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures. Eventually, Paramount bought the rights in 1936, however, the film was not made for several more years; it was reactivated in 1941, with Frank Tuttle assigned as director.[7] The book's plot line was kept essentially unchanged, though moved from the original European and British setting to an American one.
