Clean pages with light tanning and mild foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Minor splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Visible wear marks to boards.

New York: International Book Company. Good. [1890]. Hardcover. Also contains "Jubal and other Poems," and "The Spanish Gypsy." Previous owner's contemporary bookplate and Recv'd 1945 in ink on the front inner pastedown. There are a couple of old stains to the decorated cover and an old owner name on front paste down. The front inner hinge is starting, pages are age toned and brittle as is common with this publisher. No date, but this publisher was only active for three years -- 1890 - 1892 (though some publications still had the imprint until about 1896). Various paging (each work paged separately). Impressions of Theophrastus Such was the last published work of Eliot and first appeared in England in 1879, so this is a very early U.S. ed. because the publisher changed his imprint to John W. Lovell Company in 1882; the three works in this volume are part of a 6-vol. set; 356 p., clean and unmarked except for period book plate of former owner on front paste-down; atrong though age-toned paper; green boards with gilt lettering and medallion showing the author in profile are somewhat bumped and abraded, severe discoloration in parts; gutters are cracked--this volume would reward rebinding. Of special interest is Impressions of Theophrastus Such, as it was an experimental work in which the scholarly protagonist reveals his character through a series of literary essays and reminiscences--many of which are considered to be those of Eliot herself.

Soiled scuffed, owner's name on flyleaf. All edges gilt. Still pretty in a faded-glory kind of way. Contents excellent. 356pp.. Hardcover.
