Kyoto: Kyoto Hanga-In Co., Ltd, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Patterned large 8vo hardcover folder with paper title label, interior flaps, string ties. Booklet "Explanations and Stories" red string bound in patterned stiff wraps lettered in red. 8 pp. illustrated with black and white reproductions of the six woodblocks with the story of each in English and Japanese. Errata table tipped onto inside cover. The six color 9 1/4" x 11" woodblock prints are all fine and bright with the exception of the first which has some toning about the top and right margins where the thin paper interior folder touched it. The striped bottom interior flap (matching the covers) is detached but present, wear to the cover tips and spine side fold. Gekko Ohashi (b. 1895) on the Japan's Shikoku Island, began his career by painting illustrations for newspaper and amgazines about 1925; in 1935 he began to devote his painting to the subject of Kabuki theater, for hich he gained his fame.

Preserved in publisher’s portfolio, striped cover, colour woodblock print mounted on front cover, dark brown silk ties (minor edgewear, rubbing), still NF copy. First edition of this second installment of beautifully rendered Japanese woodblock prints by the noted Japanese artist, Gekko Ohashi (1859-1920), self-taught Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print artist, inspired by Hokusai, with stylistic elements from nihonga. These plates illustrate actors and scenes from such Kabuki dramas as Ibaraki, about Yoritomo Minamoto’s fight against a female demon, Meido no Hikyaku, Honcho Niju Shiko, and more.
