Publisher's red board with gilt lettering to the front board and spine. Top edge stained vibrant red. A book-plate to the front free end-paper and slight softening to the head and tail f the still still overall a VG+ copy (with NO inscriptions but with an attractive book-plate to the front paste-down). In the rare dust wrapper which is un-priced (as this copy was sourced from the British Commonwealth thus being an "export" copy. The D/W is identical to that originally issued in the UK apart from the price of 7/6 net to the spine. The D/W has benefitted from some highly skilled archival restoration by a skilled paper conservator including replacement of the publisher's name (THE BODLEY HEAD) at the base of the spine. Light rubbing to the cloth at the edges with a couple of faint spots to the front board. Red top stain. Purple bookseller's stamp to the rear endpaper. Book clean throughout, in a tight binding, only very lightly cocked. In the rare second issue dust jacket which has the price 3/6 on the spine, several large chips to the bottom edges, shallow chipping to the head of the spine, one large piece missing at the spine foot about 2 inches in size and a large tear along the front flap fold.

Owner name on the front wrap, and several lines checked in the margins in red pencil, an about very good copy of this adaptation from C.S. Forester's novel. An acting edition, and the true first. Dell's adaptation was the basis for the Lothar Mendes film featuring Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Sullivan, and Ray Milland (curiously, Forester's novel wasn't even credited). Scarce.
