He was born 1896 in Atlanta. His sister was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia and was a prominent Atlanta attorney, historian, and devout Catholic. He also edited the Atlanta Historical Bulletin.
