In remarkably good condition for a 45 year old paperback. A few creases on the cover and the number 49 was written on the front and then somewhat unsuccessfully erased. Pages all clean and tight, but somewhat yellowed with age. Originally published in 1963. A rather rare book.

Cover has moderate shelf-wear to edges and surfaces, with slight curling to corners. Mild crushing to spine ends, with visible reading creases to front cover and spine. Book has a subtle forward lean. Small split to spine end, with a slight tan overall.

Theodore Sturgeon, better known for his Science Fiction, wrote this "Queen" mystery using the publisher's Ellery Queen "house name." The story is framed as a chess match, Ellery Queen against an unnamed killer intent on eliminating members of a wealthy New York family unless Ellery can discover the murderer's strategy and final objective. Foxing and some soiling on top and fore edges of the text; bottom of spine lightly bumped, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket is 95% whole, showing a one-inch closed tear on the bottom edge of the back panel, a bit of chipping at the spine ends and other minor surface-and-edge wear. This is a first book club edition in remarkably good shape, making it a very decent reading copy.

Vintage ex-library in library binding with glued on front of dust jacket with expected markings, a perfect card pocket with card stamped for withdrawals from 1965 to 1969. Light wear and slight soil.
