A very attractive early copy of Dr. Seuss's hard to find second book, varying from the first edition by only a few points (the order of the hats on the endpapers, the lack of the final Mulberry St price on the rear flap - see Younger, p 62.) Large format, unpaginated, bound in black illustrated paper covered boards with red cloth spine, illustrated in black and white with touches of red.

Later printing. Book is very good with scuffing to the bottom edges, pages clean, and binding tight. Dust jacket has $2.95 price indicating a later printing. On the back flap, there is no price for Mulberry Street. Overall, dust jacket is very good. Younger and Hirsch pp.62-64. On the front pastedown to the front free endpaper, the illustration of hats is from small to large. In the first edition, it is the reverse.

"The first hat was old and battered, but it had a fine feather stuck in it of which any little boy would be proud..." A favourite Dr. Seuss story, which, of course, "turned out very happily" (n.b., quotes from dust jacket flap). This volume a mixed state: the hill is in one continuous line spanning the pages (first issue) instead of a broken line and has the correct prices on the jacket flaps. New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel's books, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England, while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if he took the man's hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so "stuffy" that he would just grow a new one. The book received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times reviewer called the book "a lovely bit of tomfoolery which keeps up the suspense and surprise until the end."
