Knoxville, TN: F. S. Keiskell, 1834. Quarter Leather. Good+ binding. 12mo. 299 pp. First edition. In original calf spine with paper over boards expertly renewed with period paper; new pastedown and preliminary blank; final leaf of the contents is supplied in a surprisingly good facsimile. A sophisticated copy, but the conservation was done with great care to the appearance. Spine a bit desiccated but solid; dampstaining to the preliminaries; foxing throughout. A fairly uncommon book by the Tennessee minister, editor, and eventually, post-bellum governor and U.S. Senator. While more known for his role as a newspaper editor with a bent towards the incendiary and his outspoken stance on the Confederacy, manifest in Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession (1862) and elsewhere, this remains a notable book with several dozen pages of his autobiography and travels. Knoxvill, 1834. 299pp. Original calf-backed paper boards, spine gilt. Hinges started, boards rubbed, edges and corners worn. Toned, with moderate foxing. Good plus. An early work by William Brownlow, later editor of the TENNESSEE WHIG, and then Governor and Senator for the state. During this period of his life, Brownlow was a travelling Methodist preacher. This work consists of a lengthy attack on Presbyterianism and a short autobiography, including an account of his travels through North Carolina, Tennessee, and Cherokee Nation. ALLEN 1113.
