Each leaf with two to four very attractive four-line illuminated initials in blue, green, magenta, orange, and burnished gold, some with gold bezant extensions. Occasional marginalia in a contemporary hand. Goff B-563; BMC V, 180. ◆Some trivial light foxing or faint dampstaining, but IN FINE CONDITION, the paper very fresh, and the illumination sparkling. These are beautifully illuminated leaves from the renowned Venetian printer Nicolaus Jenson. Born a Frenchman near Troyes, Jenson (1420-80) is known to have set up shop in Venice in 1470, and during a decade of labor, he probably issued in excess of 100 works. Leaf 194 from gathering 20 of book one, text from 2 Esdras chapter 15 and 16. Double column, 48-lines printed in Gothic type. Titles and chapters in alternating red and blue letters, red and blue two-line initials, rubricated capital initials. Lines 35 to 41 in both columns of recto (only) are reset. 2 ?-inch closed tear to outer margin just slightly affecting text expertly repaired, two old paper-clip ghosting marks to upper margin. Leaf housed in a cloth portfolio; slipcase with gilt lettered red morocco spine label. A fine leaf from the fourth edition of the Vulgate Bible or the 48- line Bible, preceded only by the 42-line Gutenberg Bible, the 36-line Pfister Bible (Bamberg) and the 49-line Mentelin Bible (Strassburg). The first also to include the date of publication, the place of printing, and bear the name of the printer.

A very large, impressive copy, with broad margins, preserving numerous deckled edges. The quires are numbered in a contemporary hand, in red ink, at the foot of leaves. The stub for the canceled blank leaf ll3 (the conjugate of leaf ll9) is visible, with instructions to the binder. With numerous blue fabric tabs, each marking an individual book of the Bible. Rubricated throughout, with a few larger red brushwork initials and red and blue Lombard capitals, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. The book is adorned with Zainer's distinctive, large woodcut initials, a larger decorative marginal decoration, and a woodcut of Saint Jerome in his study, working on the Vulgate. on first text leaf (a few corners torn away, one affecting the woodcut decoration in the margin; damp-staining in gutter and lower margin, some light dust-soiling at ends. With manuscript headlines in red, a beautiful opening initial of 10 lines with elaborate flourishes that flow from the very top to very bottom of the page in red, blue and green, numerous 6 line initials in red and blue, some with much longer extensions or flourishes, a profusion of 3 line initials in red or blue, red paragraph marks and additional rubricating throughout primarily in red. Royal folio (375 x 265mm approx), in contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over thick wood boards, (probably a Nuremberg binding), the boards center-paneled and decorated in blind with a central tool within multiple borders, remnants of brass catches on the fore-edge.
