Small Quarto (9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches; 235 x 190 mm), 72, [4] pages in illustrated wrappers (soft cover).Exhibition catalogue focusing on artistic renderings of the Epic of Gilgamesh (in German, Gilgamesch), a Mesopotamian king. With drawings by Willi Baumeister and prints by Baumeister, Richard Janthur, Josef Hegenbarth, Rolf Nesch, and Emil Schumacher. Baumeister (1889-1955) had long been interested in the ancient art and culture of the Near East. Indeed, according to Baumeister biographer and friend Will Grohmann, Baumeister knew the epic by heart. (See "Gilgamesh in Modern Art," by Brigitte Pedde, in F. Pedde and N.
