Description:
New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1997. Number 64 of a limited edition of 300, signed by the artist and photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson who supplied four photogravures for this book, printed on handmade paper. A beautiful production with the book bound in rich red cloth with front cover label, matching clamshell box lined in black ultrasuede. The book is in fine condition, tight binding, pristine pages, no names or other markings. The box has a subtly faded and still red spine, otherwise fine condition. Obtained from the original owner who purchased the book from the Limited Editions Club. Does not includes the LEC newslatter but we have provided a copy of a page from a publisher's prospectus that provides additional details on how the book was published. Book measures approximately 14.75 x 14 inches. . Signed by the Artist. Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine Clamshell Box. Folio - 12" - 15" Tall.

Illustrated with four spectacular full-page photogravure prints, printed on hand- made paper by Cartier-Bresson and selected by him especially for this Edition. Cartier-Bresson's only published nude studies to date. Spine of Box mildly and evenly sunned with a tiny, short scratch. Small patch of mild sunning to top front cover of Box. A Very Fine, Pristine, apparently unread copy of this most rare and exquisite production in a Near Fine+ Box.

Description:
When Baudelaire published the first edition of Les Fleurs du mal in 1857, the subject matter and the style touched off a scandal. The resulting outcries from some critics and his defense by others led to Baudelaire's trial for obscenity. He was ordered to pay a 300-franc fine and exclude six poems from the book. (Even his mother thought the poems were blasphemous.) Today, we can appreciate how Baudelaire extended the subject range of poetry.Inspired by Baudelaire's images, Henri Cartier-Bresson has chosen three poems from Les Fleurs du mal to illustrate with four photogravures. Among those banned in 1857 was "Les Promesses d'un visage" ("What a Pair of Eyes Can Promise").
