The book: Rare early 17th-century Elzevir edition of Barclay's best-known work, the Argenis, a political romance, resembling in certain respects the Arcadia of Philip Sidney, and the Utopia of Thomas More. The book was completed about a fortnight before his death, which has been said to have been hastened by poison.

Lugd. Bat. Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1630. Spine title panel detached but extant. Scuffed and rubbed. Hinges cracked. Latin notes to front endpapers, titles and first few pages. Bookplate to rear pastedown. Painted closed edges a little faded, textblock clean and firm.. Full Leather. Good Minus. 24mo.

Amsterdam: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1659. Hardcover. Near Fine. 18mo; pp. 569 + index. Text in Latin. Handsome contemporary red morocco, heavily gilt. Leaf of later manuscript notes in French tipped in before title. There were many editions of this political romance printed in a number of European countries. Last leaf of index with an ink stain at the top continuing to endpapers, but this is still a very nice copy in a beautiful binding.
