The next section deals with the laser diode, the probable source for all future optical communication systems. A detailed discussion of the double heterostructure stripe geometry laser diode, including its spectral properties and the problem of dispersion in an optical communication system, is given. The final section of the book is an introduction to optical imaging, including noise and information capacity, holography and the new solid state camera, the charge coupled device area image sensor.
