About This Item

Macmillan, London, 1979. First Edition. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. white titles spine; illustrated throughout by b/w. photo's., drawings & diagrams; "this book introduces a number of optoelectronic devices. Beginning with the LED lamps and displays, whose principles are discussed, the author devotes approximately one-third of the book to the various solid state photodetectors, the photoconductor, photodiode, avalanche photodiode and phototransistor. The principles of thermal and shot noise are introduced in order to assess the signal-to-noise ratio and noise equivalent power (NEP) of these photodetectors. The second half of the book begins with a detailed account of the solar cell, including its electrical and optical characteristics and a discussion of present and future applications and the economics of its future development. The next section deals with the laser diode, the probable source for all future optical communication systems. A detailed discussion of the double heterostructure stripe geometry laser diode, including its spectral properties and the problem of dispersion in an optical communication system, is given. The final section of the book is an introduction to optical imaging, including noise and information capacity, holography and the new solid state camera, the charge coupled device area image sensor. An appendix provides an introduction to photometric units, used in specifying the intensity of LEDs, including a comparison with the more familiar radiometric units."; previous owner's name to pre-title page; including index - 137 pages.
