About This Item
Moscow: Sovetskii Khudozhnik, 1991. Illustrated wrappers. Book measures: 33 x 23 cm. 48 pages: illustrations. Text in Russian. A very good copy with light wear to wrappers.

The publication, formerly known as "Decorative Art of the USSR," later renamed "Decorative Art," played a pioneering role in the late 1980s by being one of the earliest Russian magazines to delve into contemporary art. Beginning in 1989, it featured a section called "Rakurs," which became a platform for showcasing significant content. Notably, the entire fifth issue of 1991 was dedicated to the emerging concept of performance art, which was still relatively new in Russia then.

The magazine was responsible for publishing the initial translation of an excerpt from Roselee Goldberg's book "The Art of Performance: A Critical Anthology" (New York, 1984). In addition to this, it contained critical articles contributed by individuals like V. Tupitsyn, E. Bobrinskaya, and I. Backshtein. It also featured the very first articles covering the performances of Soviet unofficial artists, including Rimma and Valery Gerlovin, TOTART, Andrei Monastyrsky, Komar and Melamid, German Vinogradov, the "Mukhomor" group, and many others.
