About This Item

London: James Imray & Son, 1884 [Supplement to September, 1903.]. viii, 1008 (74). Octavo. Rebound in full dark red cloth. New endpapers. Gilt titling on cover and spine. Edges are trimmed and somewhat dust soiled. Minimal foxing and staining throughout the volume. Illustrated with 44 maps, including sixteen fold outs, and including charts of New York, Stanley Harbour in the Falklands and Rio. This would certainly have been the book you would have consulted if you were considering sailing the Atlantic Ocean in the mid-nineteenth century! It contains sailing directions for ports, harbours, islands and reefs of the east and west shores of the Atlantic, and there are detailed chapters on winds, tides, currents and extreme weather conditions. This is Lieutenant Commander Andrew David's copy of a scarce title and carries David's bookplate on the front free end paper. A really uncommon book; at time of cataloguing no other copies available. Please note that this is a heavy volume; additional shipping charges will apply. 1862
