About This Item

[Ocala, Marion County, Florida, ca. 1890-1895]. Large albumen photograph on convex mount with original photographer's violet stamp; near fine.

A wonderful image taken by an Ocala, Florida photographer for what was possibly an entry at the Ocala Exposition. The exposition was begun circa 1890 to promote and advance the development of citrus and other tropical and semi-tropical fruits in Florida.  "Mrs. McClymond's" name is handwritten on a card and placed at the foot of her cereus plant.

Captioned on verso in pencil: "Flash light - night blooming cereus." Even though his stamp on the image's verso says "Instant Pictures a Speciality," illuminating the natural beauty of the blooms in this lighting environment would have been a challenge for Colby.
