London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1950. Hardback. Good. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. Green cloth, spine lettered in red. Sunning and offsetting to spine, edges tanned and heavily foxed. Foxing to endpapers and prelims, POIs to front pastedown and ffep, else, clean, despite the poor paper stock. In the original dust jacket: price-clipped, spine darkened, spine ends frayed, chips to corners, toned and rubbed. Good+/ good+ Unusual. The track of the cat � at which the typographically punning dust jacket hints � is the tread of a cattle-killing panther in the snowscape of northern California, with the ranching brothers getting closer and closer as they try to hunt it in a blizzard..."You can take it as a symbolic, universal drama of man [sic] against an implacable Evil Principle, forever stalking him [sic]" (Saturday Review of Literature).
