About This Item

Springfield, Illinois: Charles C. Thomas, Publisher, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo. Pp. ix, 180. A collection of essays from judges, police officials, psychiatrists, government officials, et al. The Institute was formed as a division of the Southwestern Law Enforcement Institute, itself part of the Southwestern Legal Foundation, in Dallas, Texas. Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Slight offsetting to front cover, else Fine. Among the more enticing subjects are "Interviews with Youthful Offenders" and "Causation of Delinquency." The involvement of the FBI and the highest levels of federal government indicate the profound influence youth wielded in the national consciousness. The threat was abetted by depictions in pop culture: Whether James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause or several JD roles played by Dick Bakalyan, a generation that had just fought in WWII was perplexed by their dissipated progeny. In the Wild Ones Brando is asked, "what are you rebelling against?" He replies, "whaddaya got?
