About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Hugh Pentecost: A pen name of Judson Philips, a man of many detectives. Under both names, Philips published over 100 books, most of which were in one of eight different series. The largest series featured Pierre Chambrun with 23 books. In spite of all these series, almost a quarter of his books were stand-alone novels. This is the 19th Pierre Chambrun novel.

Barbara Michaels: This is another pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, better known as Elizabeth Peters. As Michaels, she is known for Gothic and supernatural thrillers. Mertz wrote 29 novels as Michaels, 39 as Peters, and one nonfiction book under her real name. Mertz died in 2013.

Sara Woods: Woods did her writing in Canada, but all her novels were set in her native England. She created three short detective series under three different pseudonyms, but her main claim to fame is the 48 novels in the Anthony Maitland series. This is the 40th Maitland novel.
