About This Item

Paris: Chez Pierre-Laurent Giffart, Librairie, MDCCLX [1760]. First Edition. 12mo. xxxii, 524pp., papered boards; printed paper spine label; modestly tooled spine decorations; speckled edges. Pictorial wove paper bookplate with legend "Bayard," engraved by "J. G. Z." Binding scuffed; sewing opened between title leaf and subsequent leaf; text quite clean; an unsophisticated good copy in an early, if not contemporary, binding.

Biography of celebrated French Renaissance soldier, Pierre Terrail (1476-1524), more generally known as the Chevalier (Knight) de Bayard or simply, le bon chevalier-the good knight. Biographer Guyard de Berville here presents a portrait of nobility, exemplified in the long and courageous military career of the Chevalier de Bayard, who served three successive French kings.

This copy has tipped into it a pictorial bookplate on wove paper bearing the simple legend, "Bayard." The bookplate depicts a portrait of a man in renaissance costume, possibly Chevalier de Bayard as an older man. It is unclear whose bookplate this is, but it may have been commissioned by a Bayard descendant. The bookplate is signed "J. G. Z." and possibly attributed this to James George Zobell (1792-1879) an English engraver in London who was known for his portraits as well as engravings for sporting prints.

Below the imprint date, and after the royal approbation, are the manuscript initials "G. B.," possibly in the author's hand.

OCLC: 6 cc., various accessions, for this 1760 first edition; unlisted in American institutions.
