V.p.: v.d., as below. An interesting collection of early USPS ephemera and manuscript ledgers recording postal business. The collection includes three ledgers and 17 items of office ephemera, primarily from Pennsylvania and Maine, comprised of the following. Ledger, small 4to, pp. [62]. Quarter calf over paper covered boards. Records dated 1833-1838, mostly recording drafts from local postmasters in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, received by the Postmaster General. Text mostly on rectos, very good and legible. Ledger, small folio, pp. ~82 in two sections with a large portion of unused leaves in between. A register of orders organized by customer, with dates from 1827-1829. Mostly postage, but with a number of entries for a variety of newspapers, including the New England Farmer, Youth Companion, Boston Patriot, Christian Mirror, Portland Advertiser, NE Palladium, and so on. A later note identifies this ledger as coming from Dublin, NH, although the most prominent name is Daniel W. Lord, possibly the businessman from Massachusetts and Maine. Full calf, wear and tide marks, good and legible. Ledger, small folio, pp. ~70 followed by unused leaves. Records dated 1843-1850. A few leaves of scrap paper and a loose ledger sheet laid in. A register of post office boxes and their accounts, recording mail in, including newspaper delivery of papers such as the Boston Courier, National Protestant, New York Observer, Sailor's Magazine, etc. Customer names place the ledger somewhere near Hopkinton NH, half reverse calf over marbled boards, boards rubbed, gutter split, good and legible. 1566-D Deposit receipt cancelled 1927 Philadelphia. "This certifies that I have received a remittance of surplus funds for deposit to your credit as stated below:" Three postal money orders for 25 and 20 dollars, dated 1825 and 1826 respectively from Danby Vt. to Wheelock & Cushman Three receipts for postage,1841, 1842, 1849. The first from Philadelphia for $10.08 and the second from Houlton, ME, for $2.81/4, the third from Topsham, ME. 4 covers for official post office business. 2 cancelled, one addressed but not cancelled, and one unused. From Maine, Washington DC, and Bucks County PA. Dead letter envelope, Washington DC cancel, 1896, with original letter enclosed. Audit notice 2-1212 from 1892 informing John B Clemens, postmaster of Montgomery County PA that his accounts are in order. Photograph of a Pittsburgh Post Office car, ca. 1910, in a Flanders Model 20 chassis. Letters from Sharptown N. J., 1858 printed broadside ledger, with some later pen and pencil manuscript on verso and filling in charts. Engraved broadside certificate instating Joseph Rosenberger as postmaster of Hilltown PA, signed by Rosenberger and dated 1806. United States postal guide, second series, July 1892. Vol. XIV, No. 7. pp. 52, printed self-wrappers, red pen on one page, else fine. All material in very good or better condition.
