Badoc, Ilcos Norte, Philippines: Published by the Author, 1940. 91,[1]pp. Large octavo (23.4 x 15.7 cm). Stiff printed wrappers with pictorial vignette. Small chip from upper fore-corner of rear wrapper, small adhesions at staples and at lower edge of terminal leaf, three tiny stab holes from former (now absent) stiff card folder; otherwise, a very good copy. First edition. An intriguing exposition of war strategy games to be played out with chess or checker sets, based on the European theatre and the Sino-Japanese war. The rear wrapper announces a forthcoming sequel, including "The Invasion of Poland" and "Mines and Ships." It is noted that purchase of this book upon its original publication "includes the privilege of consulting the author on game questions and problems by mail." A coupon with a manuscript serial number at the end of the text authorizes that privilege. Scarce: OCLC locates seven copies. The Japanese invasion and beginning of the occupation of the Philippines followed in Dec. 1941, and it seems unlikely that this book enjoyed wide distribution in the wake of those events. OCLC: 5429775.

(Betts: 42-9) First edition.Fairy Chess Review (FCR) was a magazine that was devoted principally to fairy chess problems but also included extensive original results on related questions in mathematical recreations such as knight's tours and polyominos (under the title of "dissections") as well as much else, such as chess-related word puzzles. It appeared six times per year and nine volumes were published, from 1930 to 1958. Although they are often referred to under the title Fairy Chess Review, the first two volumes (August 1930 to June 1936) in fact bore the title The Problemist Fairy Chess Supplement. These were published by the British Chess Problem Society (BCPS) as an offshoot of their magazine The Problemist which began in 1926. The first two volumes were supported financially by the Falmouth businessman Charles Masson Fox who was also a problemist, who died in 1936. From volume… Read More

iv+252 pages with diagrams, photographs and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by Yasser Seirawan. First edition. The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. In case of a tie, the prize fund would be shared equally with Kasparov retaining the title.Unlike the 1987 WCC cycle in which Karpov was seeded directly into the final candidate match, this time he was only reserved a spot in the quarter finals, and thus had to win three mini-matches in order to face Kasparov. This he accomplished by defeating Johann Hjartarson 3½ to 1½, Artur Yusupov 4½ to 3½ and Jan Timman 6½ to 2½.Perhaps as a psychological ploy, Karpov suggested a last minute change to the rules in the pre-match press conference. Karpov argued…

Notes by Charousek, Marcoczy and other contemporaries. First edition. This international tournament, held in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Hungary's turbulent existence was the first one ever staged on Magyar soil. Prominent masters from Russia, the United States, Austria, Germany, France and the host nation were on hand to participate in the historic proceedings. When Gyula Makovetz, one of the invited players, was unable to attend, Maroczy, brilliant second-place winner at Nuremberg eight weeks earlier, was given the chance to play. Unfortunately, he suffered a disappointing reversal in form (+4 -6 =2) and finished outside the prizewinner list. The tournament was a bitterly fought affair between two uncompromising warriors, Tchigorin and Charousek - both scoring 8 1/2 out of 12 points (+7 -2 =3). In their seventh-round…

One sheet card (4" x 6") with commemorative stamp affixed with special cancellation with letter of authentication. Postal chess for move (unused) on verso. Signed by Svetozar Gligoric in blue. The European Team Championship is an international team chess event, eligible for the participation of European nations whose chess federations are located in zones 1.1 to 1.9. This more or less accords with the wider definition of Europe used in other events such as the Eurovision Song Contest and includes Israel, Russia and the former Soviet States. The competition is run under the auspices of the European Chess Union (ECU). The idea was conceived in the early 1950s, when chess organizers became aware of the need for another international team event. Consequently, a men-only Championship was devised and held every four years, with the intention of filling in the gaps between Olympiads. More recently, the Championship has grown in importance and popularity and is regarded as a prestigious tournament in its own…
