De geschiedenis van de voc, de grootste handelsonderneming van haar tijd, is spectaculair: muiterijen, schipbreuken, militaire expedities, diplomatieke huzarenstukjes. Maar de geschiedenis van de voc is ook gebouwd op routine en regelmaat. Elk jaar waren er tientallen retourschepen in de vaart langs het 'karrenpad' tussen Europa en Oost-Indië. De reis ging wel eens mis, door schipbreuk, kaping of oorlogen. Toch ging het in 95 procent van de gevallen goed: lading en bemanning bleven behouden; de schepen brachten het verhoopte rendement en doorliepen hun beoogde levenscyclus.
