Longmans, Green & Co, London and Bombay, 1899. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Various. list of illustrations. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white illustrations and part page illustrations by various illustrators including -- Gordon Browne, J. B. Greene, R. Wheelwright and Launcelot Speed. Illustrated covers, showing a heraldic shield with a suit of armour's head piece in the middle of the shield, with crossed halberds at the back of the shield against a tan coloured cloth board with black titles to the front panel and backstrip. A series of 10 short stories by late 19th-century authors, including G.A. Henty, George Manville Fenn, Harry Collingwood and W. C. Whistler, written for the young adolescent reader with lots of derring-do. Part of the Longmans' Colonial Library series. Bumping, rubbing and fraying to the backstrip edges and book corners. There has been flecking, rubbing and some staining to the cloth of the boards. There is a small hole to the front spine gutter edge 2" down from the top edge. Browning and some foxing to the text block edges and to the endpapers and internal text. On the front paste-down is a handwritten "prize plate" dated Christmas 1903. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
