Collected from "her highly successful gardening columns," written for The Observer between 1946 and 1961 and centered on her garden at Sissinghurst. In 1930, Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicolson, purchased Sissinghurst Castle, a Kentish Elizabethan mansion, and set about developing it as the setting for a large-scale garden. In many ways, she later wrote, the garden expressed a fusion of their temperaments in which the overall effect achieved combined "the strictest formality of design, with the maximum informality in planting." The linked but individual sections were distinguished by predominant color themes or by concentration on the flowers of a single season. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

From 1946, the poet and novelist Vita Sackville-West wrote a gardening column in the Observer. The columns were later collected into a set of books published between 1951 and 1958. Vita's extensive gardening knowledge, her intense passion for her subject and her lively literary flair make these classics of garden writing essential for any serious gardener's bookshelf. Volume 1 in a series of four anthologies reproducing the lively gardening columns by Vita Sackville-West. This volume covers 1946-1950. Hb, virtually as new, in attractive dw, designed by Paul Holmes, slight fading to the spine, hence fine rather than as new. A very nice copy. .
