Collected from "her highly successful gardening columns," written for The Observer between 1946 and 1961 and centered on her garden at Sissinghurst. In 1930, Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicolson, purchased Sissinghurst Castle, a Kentish Elizabethan mansion, and set about developing it as the setting for a large-scale garden. In many ways, she later wrote, the garden expressed a fusion of their temperaments in which the overall effect achieved combined "the strictest formality of design, with the maximum informality in planting." The linked but individual sections were distinguished by predominant color themes or by concentration on the flowers of a single season. N. B.
