NY: Robinson, Pratt, 1840. Tenth edition. Leather covered boards; 288 pg.; 4-1/4 by 6-1/2 by 1 inch. "Especially designed to prevent dullness and monotony in the reading and declamation of schools." Includes over 100 short essays and selections of poetry such as The American Indians, Mount Auburn, The Falls of Niagara, Religion, The Passion for Dress, The Mother of Washington, and many more. Original engraved frontispiece, "The Young Orator," with poses Sentimental, Argumentative, Introductory, and Oratorical illustrated, pasted down to inside of front cover.

Ex-library discard with the usual stamps and labels; old label from Lynn Public Library pasted down on back of title page. Leather surface and edges very worn; corners rounded from bumping, core showing through. Spine with old repair of brown library tape; front and back hinges also with taped repair. Front endpapers missing. Light foxing throughout; paper bright; letterpress with faint impression of type visible on versos. A couple of small pencil or pen marks in text, not extensive.
