About This Item

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1836. Original quarter calf over cloth, gilt title, (3-1/2 x 5-1/4 inches). 288 pages; engraved title page and frontis. This first edition was published in 1836 and reprinted by Cary, Lea & Blanchard in 1839,1840, 1841 and 1843. The first edition is SCARCE. "T. S. Arthur was among the most well known, prolific American authors of the 19th century. Now mostly forgotten, his moralistic and temperance literary output included hundreds of books and periodical contributions. Arthur's classic 1854 book "Ten Nights in a Bar Room" was among the best sellers of the century. It was widely reprinted over a fifty year period, adapted into a very popular play, and made into silent/talkie movies." T.S. Arthur is also the author of The Young Wife's Book. Expected general overall wear and rubbing, scattered foxing, former bookplate of Chas. D. Griggs, remains a desirable copy of a scarce book. Size: 24mo. First Edition.. Cloth. Very Good.
