About This Item
[Photo Album] [Girls Education] Photo album with 49 photos of a young girl and her friends around 1920. 49 small silver gelatin print photos. All approximately 1 1/4 x 1 in. Original green paper boards. 7 x 10 in. Ribbon tie binding. Gilt "Photographs" on front cover. 7 pages. Original owner's name on top right front cover in pencil. Handwritten captions identify the first and last names of most sitters. One hand-drawn pencil portrait on last page of a woman wearing a winged Dutch cap. Photographs of at least 35 different children. Small portrait photos from children with many different props used during daily activities, including sports equipment and theater costumes. All of the young girls have short bob haircuts, a popular style of the early 1920's, especially for those who played sports. Many of the girls are pictured with athletic accessories for tennis rackets, basketballs, and volleyballs. One picture even shows a girl in a top hat with what appears to be an (empty) alcohol bottle; 1920 was the year in which Prohibition passed in the US, banning the sale and consumption of alcohol, and this photo certainly seems to be commenting on that issue. Other pictures show the girls posing with a parasol, stuffed animal, baby doll. Many children pretend to talk on an old-fashioned upright or candlestick telephone. Photos of boy classmates show them dressed in a range of costumes, including as cowboys with neck kerchiefs and wide brim hats, in a sporting cap with a golf club, and in a top hat with a cane.
