About This Item
Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1937. First US Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Fair. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14.5cm, 344pp. This copy has been signed and dedciated by John Van Druten in pencil to the ffep, "Vivian - for West Hampstead. John". Vivian was Vivian de Sola Pinta, a poet and literary critic, who was raised in Hampstead, as was John Van Druten (though specifically West Hampstead). A novel from the playwright John Van Druten. It is about two people, Blanche, a plump middle-age widow who loves the theatre and Glyn a self-centred young man with no money and pile of rejected plays. By chance they sit next to each other at the theatre, and at first he sees her as a threat to his freedom and independence but as he discovers her passion for theatre. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition with clean pages and secure binding. There are a few spots of foxing and a little dusting to the page edges but otherwise all is well. The dustwrapper is rather tatty with loss at the spine ends and chipping to the edges but is now in a protective sleeve.
