The novel is a direct sequel to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and explores the emotional aftermath of the events in the previous book. In "You Only Live Twice," James Bond is deeply affected by the tragic events of the previous novel, including the death of his wife, Tracy. He is given a mission by his superiors to infiltrate Japan and investigate the activities of a secretive organization known as the Union Corse. Bond assumes a new identity and immerses himself in Japanese culture as he pursues his mission. He encounters challenges and adversaries, including the mysterious and deadly Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. The novel delves into themes of identity, rebirth, and revenge as Bond seeks closure and confronts the man responsible for his personal losses. "You Only Live Twice" is also known for its detailed portrayal of Japanese culture and society. The book was later adapted into a James Bond film of the same name, although the film version differs significantly from the novel in terms of plot and characters.

But Japan proves to be Bond's downfall, leading him to a mysterious residence known as the 'Castle of Death' where he encounters an old enemy revitalized. All the omens suggest that this is the end for the British agent and, for once, even Bond himself seems unable to disagree...
