About This Item
1637. Size of engraved surface: ca.32 cm x 26 cm. In plain ivory mount ca.7 cm wide, and black Hogarth frame. Very good condition. The county title is in Latin, contained within an elaborate cartouche. Place names are in English, but the names of the surrounding counties are in Latin. There are "credits" to SAXTON, hence the term SAXTON-HOLE or SAXTON-KIP, often used to describe maps from this work. The first work to contain a set of County Maps of England and Wales with each county engraved on a separate sheet, was the 1607 edition of W.CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA. The map here is from the 2nd. edition printed in 1610 with plain back. The later edition of 1637 has a plate number added to the lower corner which makes it easy to identify.
