Hutchings Book. Acceptable. Hardcover. Poor condition, but sturdily bound. Spine stripped away. Leather binding very edge & shelfworn. First several pages are photographs hand-pasted in with hand-written identifications. There may be a lengthy inscription by Hutchings (I can't tell if it's hand-written or printed). Several pages are advertising for hotels. Publication date not given, but some of the notations accompanying the hand-pasted photos are dated 1897..

James Mason Hutchings was an early visitor to Yosemite and fell in love with its beauty; he operated a series of hotels and restaurants in the valley and also managed a tourist agency in San Francisco which arranged for transportation and guide services. Description: Dark brown cloth over boards, title in gilt to front board, blind debossed borders to front and rear board, 16mo, measures 6 1/2" by 4 3/4"; pagination: [ii], [ii] map, [3] 4-102. Our copy has a four page ad for The Baldwin Hotel tipped in. The Baldwin was built in 1876 and was destroyed by fire in 1898, it was quite luxurious for the day. Currey and Kruska comment that this book "covers, more fully than other works of the period, every aspect of Yosemite Valley and the Big Trees that could be considered of general interest to visitors. This work is an important primary source for information on the early human history of the region"... Covers lightly rubbed and with light wear to the corners and extremities, else a tight clean copy in very good condition.
