About This Item
Adelaide: Lutheran Publishing House, 1984. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide, Lutheran Publishing House, 1984. Octavo, 216 pages with numerous illustrations. Pictorial card covers slightly marked, rubbed and bumped; an excellent copy. The front cover illustration reproduces a photographic portrait of a young Indigenous lad. The subject is unidentified and the photographer is uncredited, but we know it to be a portrait from the decade 1900s by the Adelaide photographer Charles Scott (1878-1928) of a boy from Oodnadatta called Jacky. His portrait was clearly popular in its time - we have seen contemporary examples of it as a printed postcard and a large-format developed photograph - and its use here indicates it still hit the spot some 75 years later. This issue of the yearbook contains numerous other illustrations of Indigenous interest in the lengthy article by the editor on the history of Koonibba Mission near Ceduna: 'Koonruba on the Cura Puni. The early years of the Koonibba Mission on the plain of Cura Puni, which mean's Magpie's Nest' (pages 26-51 with 21 illustrations).
